Child Of Light : Review
Game Review: Child of Light (PS4)
Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft
Genre: Role-Playing / Platformer
Platform: PS4 (also on PC, Switch, and others)
A Fairytale Brought to Life
Child of Light isn’t just a game — it’s a hand-painted storybook that comes to life. From the moment Aurora awakens in the magical land of Lemuria, the world feels like a living watercolor painting. The visual art direction is stunning, with soft brushstrokes, luminous environments, and whimsical character designs that make every frame feel like a work of art.
The writing is poetic, literally — nearly every line of dialogue rhymes, giving the story a lyrical, bedtime-story rhythm. While that stylistic choice may not be for everyone, it perfectly complements the fairytale tone.
⚔️ A Fresh Take on Turn-Based Combat
At its heart, Child of Light is an RPG that feels both classic and refreshing. The battle system blends active-time mechanics with real-time strategy, requiring timing and patience. You can delay enemy turns by attacking at just the right moment, and using Aurora’s firefly companion, Igniculus, to heal or slow down foes adds an extra layer of tactical depth.
Every character — from the jester Rubella to the mage Finn — brings unique skills that encourage experimentation and team synergy. The pacing feels balanced, offering satisfying challenge without punishing newcomers to the genre.
Exploration and Crafting
Outside of combat, exploration is graceful and soothing. Aurora’s ability to fly gives players the freedom to glide across glowing forests, underwater ruins, and dark castles, uncovering treasures and hidden passages. The Oculi crafting system, where gems are fused to boost stats or elemental damage, adds a subtle but rewarding layer of customization.
Soundtrack and Atmosphere
Composer Cœur de Pirate delivers a hauntingly beautiful piano and orchestral score that elevates the game’s emotional core. Each melody fits its environment — from the hopeful dawn themes to the melancholy tones of the darker chapters. The music is as memorable as the visuals, helping the story linger long after the credits roll.
Verdict
Child of Light is a poetic masterpiece — a rare blend of art, music, and storytelling that proves video games can be as emotionally resonant as any film or novel. It’s short, at around 10–12 hours, but every moment is crafted with care.
Score: ★★★★★ 9/10
Pros: Gorgeous art direction, inventive combat, enchanting soundtrack, heartfelt story.
Cons: The rhyming dialogue can feel forced, and seasoned RPG players might find it a bit too easy.
